2008 US Presidential Candidates’ Fundraising

The Presidential Candidates’ Fundraising data over at opensecrets.org is pretty interesting.
First of all, three of the candidates who have dropped out: Mitt Romney, Rudy Giuliani, and John Edwards, were actually the top three fundraisers.
Second, I find it very interesting that Hillary Clinton and John McCain have the most debts for their respective campaigns.
Next, look at the debts listed for Ron Paul. Yes, that is correct – $0. He is in fact the only candidate (in the running – there isn’t any data for those who have dropped out) that does not have any debts.
A few things that this data made me think about:

  • Ron Paul is the only true fiscal conservative
  • Clinton and McCain could possibly further ruin the US economy with their poor money management (based on their campaign finances anyway)
  • Why don’t these candidates use some of their “cash on hand” to pay off these debts?

In addition to following the election fairly closely, I have been reading a lot of financial blogs lately (Get Rich Slowly, I Will Teach You To Be Rich, My Money Blog, et al); so this seemed like a natural tie-in, at least to me.

Please note that I created a PDF document of the page at opensecrets.org, since it is likely to change.
