lighttpd 1.4.8 For Windows

PLEASE NOTE: Native Lighttpd Windows builds are available at http://en.wlmp-project.net/
The last available Lighttpd for Windows build that I created using Cygwin was Lighttpd for Windows 1.4.17.
Updated September 29, 2009.

I have compiled the latest version of lighttpd for Windows.

Some highlights of the changes:

  • Created an icon to stop the service, rather than using the Task Manager.
  • Removed crufty files that Windows can not utilize.
  • Made C:lighttpd the default directory instead of C:Program Fileslighttpd.
  • Smaller download.
  • README.txt (which is also displayed during the installation) has been updated to explain all of the above and gives simple upgrade instructions.
  • Sweet new setup icon!

The download is located here: lighttpd 1.4.8 setup for windows.

UPDATE: lighttpd 1.4.9 is out and you can download the Windows version here. See the announcement here.

Nice, thank you. I wonder, though, is there any effort to actually port lighty to win32? As far as I see it, this is just a patched up Cygwin version, right?

It was compiled with Cygwin. The necessary Cygwin generated .dll files and the lighttpd files were all packaged up in a nice Windows installer, so that Cygwin is not needed to run on the target machine. It is a stand-alone version that can run on Windows.

Is the Windows version of LightTPD more for development purposes or could it be used in a production environment? I am not talking serving up Google on it or anything, but perhaps lightly visited Ruby on Rails apps or something. Thanks for your efforts… running Rails on Windows with Apache seems to be nothing but trouble, and LightTPD is very well thought of in the ROR community it seems!

Kev: Yeah, I noticed that. I was hoping though that someone (there was talk on the mailing list) would take it up to actually port lighty to native win32. That would REALLY be something.
BillC: I have done tests with older versions of lighty on Cygwin (the most important software package I have installed on Windows ;) ) and have always had very dicsouraging results. Jan once told me that the reason for that is probably because lighty is simply not tested on Cygwin. Jan doesn’t have a Windows PC (at least it used to be that way).

Bill: This site is running lighttpd for Windows. This of course is not the most popular site on the Internet, but lighty has been stable.

I’m in the process of porting lighttpd 1.4.9 to win32 native. I’ve got some more work to do, but it should be done and ready to start testing within a few days.

Jeff, please post a link here when it’s ready to be tested. I am interested in trying it out.
