Here is a quick tip to decrease Firefox memory consumption on Windows, when Firefox is minimized:

1. Open Firefox and go to the Address Bar. Type in about:config and then press Enter.
2. Right Click in the page and select New -> Boolean.
3. In the box that pops up enter config.trim_on_minimize. Press Enter.
4. Now select True and then press Enter.
5. Restart Firefox.

When I first tried it, I had 12 open tabs, using about 62 Megabytes of memory, and it did not change when minimized. After applying the above instructions, the ~61 Megabytes of memory shrunk to ~11 Megabytes when minimized. These numbers were all obtained through the Task Manager, and the same tabs were all used thanks to SessionSaver. If you want to conduct this test using my described method, make sure that you have SessionSaver installed first, and also note that the installation of SessionSaver requires Firefox to be restarted. Have fun…

Gas prices are out of control. Check out the following link, which shows prices across the country. Note that New York is paying the highest prices in the country right now, as usual, and also note how much cheaper gas is in New Jersey.

Peter Cartman

Last week on South Park, the episode ripped on Family Guy, specifically how they use the flashback element to work in a funny scene that might not otherwise fit into the storyline. South Park made it seem like that was the only way that Family Guy episodes play out, one flashback after another which while funny, is not the case. I don’t have to tell you that if you’re an avid Family Guy viewer.
I was just checking out the http://blog.familyguy.com/ – Family Guy blog (link is out-dated and broken), and came across this picture*, which I found very funny:

Apple has released a bootloader called ‘Boot Camp’ that allows you to dual boot Microsoft Windows XP and Mac OS X on the same system, natively, easily, safely, with support.
‘Boot Camp’ has a much nicer interface than the hack that won the ‘boot XP on Mac’ competition and it is fully supported by Apple.

  • Pros: Windows on a Mac (obviously); the possibility to triple or quadruple boot on your Mac if you’d really like to (OS X, XP, Linux, Solaris, etc); web developing all on one system; XP hardware drivers provided by Apple; increased Apple/Mac marketshare.
  • Cons: Your Mac can get viruses/spyware/malware just like any Dell or white-box PC. Hooray.

My next notebook will be a Mac, without a doubt.

Although the source has been available for a few days, lighttpd 1.4.11 for Windows is finally here. Besides the upstream fixes from lighttpd.net, a few minor changes exist in this release. The most major to note is that an alternative stop batch file is now available for XP (and up) users. It is called stop-lighttpd2.bat and can directly replace the regular stop batch file. As usual read the release notes (in the installer) before installing/upgrading. Regarding the new stop batch file, from the readme.txt:

stop-lighttpd2.bat is an alternate stop batch file for Windows XP which doesn’t need process.exe. It uses Windows’ taskkill.exe instead.

This version incorporates patches from lighttpd.net and fixes file uploads, since it was looking for /var/tmp which does not exist on windows.

lighttpd 1.4.10 for Windows is now available. Besides the normal upstream changes available at lighttpd.net/download/, this version for Windows has webdav properties from mod_webdav compiled in, as requested. I did try to make this release include the option to run lighty as a service, but came up empty. If I get it working, I’ll release a rev A.
