3 Plugins VS W3 Total CacheBackground
In my previous article, Why You Should Install Minifying and Caching Plugins (Hint: Your Site will be FASTER), I discussed 3 WordPress plugins that I use for Minifying and Caching in order to speed up my site. By quickly configuring and activated these WordPress plugins, I was able to improve from a Page Speed score of 80/100 to 89/100.

The Big Question
When I announced that article on Twitter, Willie Jackson Direct Messaged me and wrote:

Three plugins that do what one (W3 Total Cache) does better? :)

The Claim and the Inspiration
I replied that I found that the 3 plugins I spoke about performed better, so now I’m going to back that up with some actual numbers AKA hard data. (Willie was the inspiration for this article. Thanks, Willie!)

Recap: the 3 plugins that I use for Minification and
Caching

3 Minification and Caching plugins VS W3 Total Cache
Before I get started, it is important to note that these 3 plugins do not replace the entirety of W3 Total Cache. This article addresses the caching and minification aspects.
To back up my claim that the “3 plugins” perform better than W3 Total Cache in terms of caching, I did the following:

  • Deactivated the “3 plugins” from the original article, on the same domain that I tested with
  • Installed W3 Total Cache Version 0.9.1.3 on the same test domain
  • Activated and configured the W3 Total Cache settings
  • UPDATE: W3 Total Cache settings:
    • Page Cache: Enabled
    • Page Cache Method: Disk (enhanced)
    • Minify: Enabled
    • Minify Cache Method: Disk
    • Database Cache: Enabled
    • Database Cache Method: Disk
    • Object Cache: Enabled
    • Object Cache Method: Disk
    • CDN: Disabled
    • Browser Cache: Enabled
  • Reloaded the test site in my browser
  • Ran the Page Speed test
  • Took a screenshot (see below) to show the results
Page Speed results after installing W3 Total Cache

Results
As you can see, the Page Speed of the site using the W3 Total Cache plugin is 82/100. Remember, with the “3 Plugins” it was 89/100, and without any of the caching plugins it was 80/100.

I also did some page load time testing and got the following results:

  • Without any plugins: 5.342 seconds
  • With W3 Total Cache: 4.901 seconds
  • With the “3 plugins”: 1.485 seconds

Note: All of the above values were the best case for each state, when reloading Firefox 10 times for each.

Conclusion
Between the Page Speed scores and the load times, I conclude that the “3 plugins” perform the best for me. Your results may be different, depending on your server and configuration. I’m going to stick with the “3” for now. In fact, I use these 3 plugins right here on this site.

W3 Total Cache does more than the 3 plugins that I talk about. W3TC can also handle CDN, for example. I tend to use Cookieless Domains in combination with the 3 plugins instead of a CDN, which is a cost effective way to have a small scale “personal CDN.”

I would love to hear your experience with these plugins. Please leave a comment below and let me know your results.

CookielessLately I have been really into helping people speed up and optimize their websites for speed. So today I figured that I would share one of the speed up techniques, which is to serve static content like images, css, and javascript from what is known as a “Cookieless Domain.”

What is a cookieless domain?
The concept and the setup for a cookieless domain are both fairly easy. [continue reading…]

Pepsi ThrowbackOver the last few days, I’ve spent several hours working on several self-hosted WordPress sites to optimize the page load times. Not only for my clients’ sites, but also for my own websites. I have also been drinking entirely too much Throwback Pepsi. In fact, I was very close to calling this article “Optimize WordPress for Speed. And Throwback Pepsi!,” but decided against it to avoid confusion. After all, Throwback Pepsi is the only optimized Pepsi as far as I’m concerned.

There are several aspects to a self-hosted WordPress site that factor into page load times: numbers of cascading style sheets, number of external javascript files, the number and size of images, whether or not content is delivered gzipped, and if caching is used. There are other factors of course, but the above items comprise the bulk of optimization techniques.

This problem affects any iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch running version 4.0.0 and 4.0.1 of iOS (formerly iPhone OS). On my iPhone 4, I have experienced this email problem when I read a message from my Inbox and Archive it.

I use Gmail as my mail provider, so when I’m reading messages on my iPhone, to archive a message I actually move the message from Inbox to “All Mail.”

Sergey, from Ukraine wrote in to the site to point Nginx for Windows users to his 3 add-on programs:

  1. Add-on to install Nginx as a service: NG_SRVINST
  2. Utility to convert from an Apache virtual host to an Nginx server: NG_SITE
  3. Program to manage and control the Nginx service. It automatically restarts if Nginx freezes. Stop, start, and view status in system tray: NG_TRAY

Please check these programs out, and leave comments about what you think. The above pages are in Russian, but have English instructions. Note that I have not tried these programs myself, but and passing these links on in the hopes that if will help other Nginx for Windows users.

FedEx brought me my Christmas present 6 months and 2 days early, my iPhone4. I know I’m not the only one to put together an article like this, and that some photos are blurry, but hey, I was excited to get my new toy. Clicking a photo will open the original large (~3 MB) photo. Here are my official iPhone4 unboxing photos:

The Thesis theme and framework for WordPress recently released their latest version, 1.7 for download. There are several improvements in this release and the upgrade process from Thesis 1.6 is fairly simple, but there are several steps to carry out a smooth transition to version 1.7.

Step Zero. Before you start the upgrade process, it’s a good idea to backup your WordPress database using phpMyAdmin and if you are nervous and want to save your Thesis settings separately, use the Thesis Settings Export Plugin to save your previous settings.

  1. Download thesis_1.7.zip.
  2. Unzip the thesis 1.7 zip file to your Desktop or somewhere that you can easily find it. The extracted folder is called thesis_17.
  3. Using FileZilla or another FTP client, log into the site you want to upgrade.
  4. Navigate to the /wp-content/themes/thesis_16 directory.
  5. Download the “custom” folder to your local computer to create a backup.
  6. On the remote site, navigate up to wp-content/themes/.
  7. Upload the new Thesis 1.7 folder (/thesis_17) to your /wp-content/themes folder.
  8. Go into the Thesis_17 folder in the /wp-content/themes/ directory on the remote server.
  9. Copy the “custom” directory that you downloaded earlier into the thesis_17 directory.
  10. In the “custom” folder, change the file permissions for “cache” from 755 to 775.
  11. Also in the “custom” folder, change the file permissions for layout.css from 644 to 666.
  12. Inside your WordPress dashboard, go to Appearance → Themes, and then activate Thesis 1.7.
  13. Visit the Design Options page from the new Thesis links on the left side of your WordPress dashboard, and make sure that Thesis is not giving you a warning about the file permissions on your layout.css file.
  14. Click the “Big Ass Save” button.

Please note that some of the links on this page are affiliate links. I am a Thesis affiliate because I love their product and use it daily. I only endorse and become an affiliate for products that I believe in. This site is running the Thesis framework, and I think every blog and small business website should run Thesis as well.
