…is the age I turned today. 30 is really coming up quick now. D’oh!

Interim Website

I’m going to be switching hard drives on my main NSLU2 server, so in the interim, these pages are currently being served by my wife’s windows PC. The pages are actually served up faster by this machine, which is not a surprise. The purpose of the NSLU2-based system is low power after all. Anyway, let me know in the comments if there’s anything weird since the switch to Windows. I’m not sure how long it will be until this site is back on Linux, but I’ll try to give updates, or just inform you when that’s the case.

Well it’s been about a month since my last post, so here’s a quick post to let you know that I’m still around.
I signed up for a http://delicious.com/ account. If you use many different computers, like I do, it’s a good way to keep track of links. I will probably add my links to the sidebar in the next few days/weeks. If you can check it out now at: http://delicious.com/kworthington.

I’ve added a semi-permanent Red Cross Donation link at the top so that people do not forget that the cleanup in the Gulf states, and particularly in New Orleans, will take years to fully recover. Please use the link above and make a donation, even if it’s only $20, $10, or $5. They need all the help they can get. Thanks. I call the link semi-permanent, because I will be leaving it up for at least a few months.

In other website news, my NSLU2 seems to get a little cranky after 19-22 days, so I have it set to reboot on a daily basis at 4:30 AM local time. I’m thinking of making this a weekly occurence though. We’ll see how daily is first…

Nostalgia

If only prices were this low again:
Cheap Gas!
At this point, twice the amount seems great.

Hurricane Relief

I know that I’m late on this, but if you already haven’t done so, donate to the Red Cross or to any of the hurricane relief funds located on CNN’s Hurricane Relief page.

Be generous, they need all the help they can get.

Sorry for being late on this. With the start of the fall semester this week, things have been nutty.

Google took yet another step towards digital domination. They have launched Google Talk, which is an instant messenger service. As of this writing, http://www.google.com/talk/ is down, but there should be information there later.
To get started, download a Jabber compatible client such as Pidgin. It is available to download for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux: http://www.pidgin.im/download/
To get started:
1. Add an account and select “Jabber” as the protocol.
2. Your screen name is the first part of your gmail address, everything before the ‘@gmail.com’.
3. Server is ‘gmail.com’.
4. Click “show more options” and make sure “use TLS if available” is checked. Leave “Force old SSL” and “allow plaintext…” unchecked. The connection port should be 5222, connection server should be ‘talk.google.com’ without the quotes.
5. There is no #5. Log in and your done.
Alright that’s enough nerdiness for now; moving on to football business:
At the Jets pre-season game against the Vikings this past Friday, Trish and I got there early and did some tailgating as usual before the game. We got some tickets to the lower section from Dan, and we went down to the third row in section 109. We were looking right at the 20 yard line, on the right side of the Jets’ sideline. Since there were two kids in front of us, one with a Jets firefighter hat and the other with a Jets construction hat, the stadium video cameraman put them, and consequently Trish and I up on the stadium jumbotron. It was another 15 seconds of fame for me. The last time I was on a screen that many people saw was last year when I went to the Long Island Ducks minor league baseball game with Trish’s dad and I was on the local cable station that televised the game. Anyway, hopefully the Jets will beat up on the Giants this Friday. I know it’s pre-season and it doesn’t matter, but I still want the Jets to win as much as I want the Giants to lose to the Jets. Until next time…
UPDATE (Aug. 24, 2005 11 AM): http://www.google.com/talk/ is back up, with more information and their own client. Check it out.

This printer-friendly article over at Reuters (link outdated; removed) talks about how Crocodiles are able to kill the HIV virus and also bacteria that were resistant to penicillin, such as Staphylococcus aureus or golden staph. The blood is being analyzed and may give researchers insight on how to produce antibiotics for humans that will kill these viruses. Definitely an interesting read, at least for me.
Here’s an interesting quote from the article:

“The crocodile has an immune system which attaches to bacteria and tears it apart and it explodes. It’s like putting a gun to the head of the bacteria and pulling the trigger”

Overdue Update

I haven’t written here in a while. Sorry about that. A lot has happened in the past month. I finished up my summer course (Cryptography and Computer Security), and I earned an A. So I got that goin’ for me…
Last week, Trish and I were down in North Carolina, the Outer Banks to be exact. We had a good time, both got tans, and did a lot of boogie boarding. We (one other couple, Trish and I) rented a house in Corolla that was only a few hundred feet from the beach. We didn’t think to take any pictures, since mostly we were on the beach. And by the way, the town of Corolla is pronounced differently from the Toyota of the same spelling. The town is called CUH-RAH-LUH, where the car is CUH-ROLE-UH. So know you know…
While we were on vacation, some guys figured out how to run the Intel version of Mac OS X on regular PCs, read: not the Intel developer machines with the trusted computing chip. A guy got it running on a standard Sony Vaio Laptop. It was featured on several sites, like Slashdot, MacNN, and Wired. Cool stuff, especially if you are a Mac enthusiast. If you’re not, I’m sorry I wasted your time on this paragraph.
In football news, The Jets beat the Lions in a pre-season matchup this past Friday. I don’t read much into pre-season games but I guess I’m happy they won. The new Heimerdinger-run offense should be a great boost this year. The acquisition of Ty Law will be a great boost defensively since Ray Mickens retired abruptly in June. Not only is it great that the Jets have a talented cornerback in Ty Law, but the fact that the Patriots do not have him anymore serves as a double whammy. This season has a lot to look forward to. More later…
In website news, I upgraded to the latest unSLUNg software on this webserver. I also installed Anthony’s Dynamic DNS Auto-Updating software called Eponym. It makes sure that my IP address syncs with my .com domain name. OK, [/end geek].
Until next time… Hopefully it won’t be a month from now.
